The Apple iOS 6 platform received a 26 percent bump in adoption rates over the weekend after Google Maps released for the platform.

According to mobile ad exchange MoPub, 12,000 apps it supports witnessed a 29 percent increase in unique iOS 6 users within five days of Google Maps finally releasing onto the iOS 6 platform.

MoPub’s monitors more than 1 billion ad impressions over 12,000 apps, allowing for a reasonably sound set of analytics for its findings.

From Monday through Wednesday, the Apple iOS 6 platform experienced a 13 percent increase in iOS 6 users.

Speaking to TechCrunch , MoPub’s CEO revealed:

“We observed since the launch of Google Maps for iOS 6 a 30 percent increase in unique iOS 6 users, and we think it’s related to Google Maps. It verifies the hypothesis that people were actually holding back to upgrade until Google Maps was available.”

Before Google Maps even released, many analysts believed users were waiting to upgrade their iOS 6 platforms in order to avoid Apple Maps.

Upgrading to iOS 6 has its advantages such as a better and improving version of Siri and the inclusion of the IdentifierForAdvertising (IFA), which replaces the non-secured UDID for user identification.

In comparison, ad network Chitika claimed a 0.2% increase in adoption, although the company’s findings only examined the first 24 hours of release while most adoption appeared to occur over the weekend.

Google Maps managed to pull down 10 million downloads in the first 48 hours of release.

iOS 6 adoption is an important part of Apple’s strategy, as the company’s users begin to adopt developers can focus on newer versions of the company’s platform, thus creating more complex and better apps.
