Ben Affleck has finally broken his silence about the backlash with which his casting as Batman was received in social media, telling Jimmy Fallon on Monday, “I’m a big boy” and “I handle s***”
So far all we had heard was the thousands of fans complaining about why Affleck should not have been cast as the dark crusader. We didn’t even know if he was aware of the backlash. Wait.
How could he not be aware of the negativity with which his casting in the Batman Vs. Superman film was being received? It’s 2013 after all and if he has any social media, he knew. Immediately.
Jimmy Fallon started the conversation on the topic by saying,
“[Your kids] have to be psyched, ’cause Daddy’s going to be Batman now.” Fallon asked.
Affleck casually said,
“This is so awesome, I’m so excited. They called me up and said, ‘do you want to do this?’”
Ben Affleck said he met with director Zack Snyder who explained to him what the plans are for this new Batman, which is different from Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight trilogy.
The actor says this, more mature Batman, is a completely different thing, but in keeping with the integrity of the character.
Affleck says he can totally do this, in his opinion. So he agreed to do it and everyone at the studio told him they were so excited and so on.
The new Batman went on to say that the studio wanted to warn him of the potential for backlash and told him to stay away from the Internet for a few days.
“I’m a big boy,” he said he told the studio. “I handle s***… I’m very tough. So I saw the announcement and I look on [the internet]. I look on the first comment. It’s like ‘ Ben Affleck is going to be Batman.’ The first one just goes, ‘Nooooooooooooooooo!’”
