John Fox hired by the Denver Broncos

John Elway has made his decision, and that is to hire John Fox as the 14th Head Coach in the history of the Denver Broncos. Fox was fired by the Carolina Panthers after going 1-15 in 2010. Overall with the Panthers he had 73-71 record in the regular season, and a 5-3 record in the playoffs. He also led the Panthers to a Super Bowl which they lost. It might seem like a questionable hire, but there may just be some crazy logic behind it.

First things first Fox is a defensive guy, and the defense in Denver is terrible and probably their biggest concern. They switched to a 3-4 scheme they did not have the right personnel for, and Fox ran a 4-3 with the Panthers. I would like to see them switch back to the 4-3 and then draft talent to make it very effective.

Now Fox has a very long history with current Denver Offensive Coordinator Mike McCoy. McCoy came from Fox’s Panthers staff where he was the QB’s coach for seven seasons. The Denver offense did a lot of good things in 2010 and they would like to see some continuity there. McCoy could come back and keep the offense moving forward as Fox focuses his attention on rebuilding the defense.

Fox was not the first guy I thought of for the Denver job, especially after a 1-15 campaign. We do know that Fox got the short end of the stick in terms of payroll from Carolina in 2010, and after looking over the situation in Denver he just might be the right guy.
