Emma Watson made the announcement in the way all major news is dispersed nowadays, tweeting to her fans and followers :

On Facebook, Watson commented further on her new pixie trim:

Watson indicated on her Facebook page that she was in New York as recently as Tuesday to promote the latest Harry Potter installment, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.
