When Oz: The Great And Powerful was first announced, movie fans of the original film were teased along, and the film’s production in Detroit was closed and shrouded in secrecy. Now that we’re two and a half months away from the release date in March, details have emerged, including the plot, and teaser posters of the land of Oz.
The most intriguing poster yet hit the web this morning, and it features one wicked witch. It’s widely believed (spoiler alert?) that Mila Kunis’ Theodora will play the main wicked witch in a transformational turn during the film. However, Disney released a photo of Rachel Weisz’ wicked witch, Evanora, and if this poster is any evidence of what we’re in store for, it looks like her witch will give Kunis’ a run for her money.
The synopsis that has been released by Disney is as follows:
“Disney’s fantastical adventure “Oz The Great and Powerful,” directed by Sam Raimi, imagines the origins of L. Frank Baum’s beloved character, the Wizard of Oz. When Oscar Diggs (James Franco), a small-time circus magician with dubious ethics, is hurled away from dusty Kansas to the vibrant Land of Oz, he thinks he’s hit the jackpot–fame and fortune are his for the taking–that is until he meets three witches, Theodora (Mila Kunis), Evanora (Rachel Weisz) and Glinda (Michelle Williams), who are not convinced he is the great wizard everyone’s been expecting. Reluctantly drawn into the epic problems facing the Land of Oz and its inhabitants, Oscar must find out who is good and who is evil before it is too late. Putting his magical arts to use through illusion, ingenuity–and even a bit of wizardry–Oscar transforms himself not only into the great and powerful Wizard of Oz but into a better man as well.”
So far Weisz has had quite the year. The actress just recently earned a Golden Globe nomination for her film The Deep Blue Sea , and was the new leading lady in The Bourne Legacy , opposite Jeremy Renner. While James Franco and Mila Kunis spoke at length about their roles, Weisz hasn’t been put out there to represent Sam Raimi’s Oz: The Great And Powerfu l. Perhaps it’s the silence that will create a slow burn of intrigue over her evil character. The surprise of Weisz’s character on the poster sure created an impactful shock, that’s for sure.
