Hot on the heels of firing Mike Mularkey as the Jacksonville Jaguars head coach, new general manager David Caldwell has told the media that Tim Tebow will not be a Jaguar either.
Reports at the end of the season were calling Tebow to Jacksonville a “ virtual certainty .” It appears those reports were nothing more than overblown rumors regarding America’s favorite back up quarterback.
Caldwell held a press conference on Thursday to address his firing of Mike Mularkey after one season. A few reporters couldn’t resist asking him about Tim Tebow. His response:
“I can’t imagine a scenario where he would be a Jacksonville Jaguar.”
For Caldwell the questions didn’t stop there. One reporter needed clarification and asked:
“Even if he’s released?”
To which Caldwell gave a very definitive:
“Even if he’s released.”
Greg Rosenthal of NFL.com reports that after Caldwell spoke the crowd was noticeably taken aback.
More than anything Caldwell made it very clear that he is in charge of player decisions. Much of the speculation regarding Tebow to Jacksonville was the way new owner Shad Khan pursued a trade for quarterback last offseason.
With Tebow out of the picture does that mean Blaine Gabbert will be the starter for a third straight season? Caldwell addressed Gabbert’s status as Jacksonville’s starting quarterback as well:
“There will be an open competition.”
After a very disappointing sophomore campaign it appears Gabbert will have to re-earn the job he lost mid-season to veteran journeyman Chad Henne.
