Cheyenne Jackson and husband Monte Lapka are filing for divorce after two years of marriage.
A representative for the 38-year-old actor and singer confirmed the news in a statement to Playbill.
“Cheyenne Jackson and his husband Monte Lapka have mutually decided to divorce. The couple have been together for 13 years and were married in NY State two years ago,” the statement said. “It is an amicable parting and, understandably, a private matter.”
Jackson and Lapka, a physicist, began dating in 2000. The couple married in September 2011 in a private beach ceremony , just months after gay marriage was legalized in New York. At the time, Jackson called Lapka “the best man I’ve ever known.”
Jackson made his Broadway debut as a an understudy for both male leads in the Tony-winning musical Thoroughly Modern Millie. In 2005, he originated his first Broadway role in All Shook Up, a tribute to Elvis Presley. In 2007, Jackson took over the lead role of Sonny in Xanadu after the original lead injured himself during rehearsal.
In the 2012-13 Broadway season, Jackson starred alongside Henry Winkler and Alicia Silverstone in David West Read’s play The Performers. While the play itself received generally mixed reviews, Jackson’s performance received positive reviews.
Jackson had a recurring role as Danny Baker, the newest TGS cast member, on 30 Rock from 2009 through 2013. Danny had a short relationship with Liz, much to Jack’s annoyance. He also played Dustin Goolsby, the coach of Vocal Adrenaline, on the second season of Glee. He has also worked as back-up singer for Liza Minnelli and Vanessa Williams, and released his first single, “Drive,” in May 2012.
A source told Us Weekly that Jackson and Lapka had been “living separate lives” for some time before the divorce was announced.
“I haven’t hear one particular reason for the separation, but Cheyenne seems to have been changing a lot this past year,” the source said. “His new tattoos … really show how he’s trying to transform himself. I have no idea why he’s doing it, but I’ve been watching it happen, really fast, this past year.”
