New York Jets star cornerback Darrelle Revis will undergo season-ending surgery to repair a torn ACL. The operation was announced on Monday morning by Jets coach Rex Ryan.
Largely considered the best cornerback in the NFL Revis underwent an MRI on Monday morning to confirm the ACL tear. Revis was injured during the third quarter of Sunday’s overtime win against the Miami Dolphins.
The ACL tear occurred as the result of a non-contact injury as Revis attempted to tackle running back Daniel Thomas.
The Jets are currently ranked 21st in yards allowed and that ranking will likely worsen with the teams star player out of commission for the rest of the still early season.
Remis will pay two to three weeks before having surgery with a recovery time typically extending from six to nine months.
Speaking of the season ending injury Rex Ryan said:
“It’s just disappointing. This guy wants to win. As great a player as he is individually, he’s a great teammate and just wants to win. That’s why he was so excited about this year.”
Stepping in for Darrelle Revis will be first-round 2010 NFL draft pick Kyle Wilson. Also playing at the position is Antonio Cromartie.
Ryan is promising fans that the New York Jets are not throwing in the towel, noting:
“We have enough to get it done here. … We’ll find a way to get this done.”
