Monte Lapka and Cheyenne Jackson were together for 13 years, one of the most prominent and longest-running same-sex relationships in Hollywood, but now are calling it quits.
Now just two years after getting married the couple is divorcing after sources close to the couple say they drifted apart.
Jackson is a star of Broadway and television, with a spot on Glee and appearances on 30 Rock, Curb Your Enthusiasm, and the recent movie Behind The Candelabra.
Monte Lapka is decidedly not Hollywood. He is a physicist by background, but together he and Cheyenne took part in many gay rights causes.
After California’s Proposition 8 was declared unconstitutional in 2010, Jackson spoke out about marriage equality in America.
“California dreaming, indeed,” he wrote at the time. “Makes me feel prouder than ever to be a strong gay man. Now come on, home state of New York… We all know that you’re the ‘concrete jungle where dreams r made of,’ so make mine come true and take the necessary steps to allow me to make it legal with my man. Step up, we believe in you.”
The two were married shortly after New York’s law allowing same-sex marriage took effect.
“It’s official, after 11 years together, Zora’s no longer a bastard,” Jackson wrote on Twitter in reference to the couple’s dog, which attended the wedding in the Hamptons.
In a statement issued to Playbill on Wednesday, Cheyenne and Monte Lapka said the split a mutual decision.
“Cheyenne Jackson and his husband Monte Lapka have mutually decided to divorce,” the statement read. “The couple have been together for 13 years and were married in N.Y. State two years ago.
“It is an amicable parting and, understandably, a private matter.”
Sources said the two had been drifting apart for quite some time.
“I haven’t heard one particular reason for the separation, but Cheyenne seems to have been changing a lot this past year,” a source told Us Weekly . “His new tattoos … really show how he’s trying to transform himself. I have no idea why he’s doing it, but I’ve been watching it happen, really fast, this past year.”
Monte Lapka and Cheyenne Jackson have not announced who will get custody of Zora.
