On one hand every time I hear about something crazy going on in the NFL the Oakland Raiders are involved. On the other Nnamdi Asomugha had a very done year, and I would not want to see a guy like that get over paid for a down year. The first reaction to the voiding of his contract was outrage, but after looking over his numbers for 2010 the Raiders made a pretty decent move.
With out a doubt Asomugha is a fine NFL corner. However he is about to turn 30 and only registered 17 tackles in 2010. No sacks, no INT’s just 17 tackles. Now if this was a move to get out of a bad deal and resign Asomugha then all the better. However, it may just be time to move on to a quicker, better, younger prospect at this position.
If the goal was to just get rid of him, I think the Raiders might have made a mistake. Let us not forget this team does not have a first round draft pick, and even if they did the elite corners in this draft would be gone by the time they picked at 17. Sure they may find a very fine corner in the later rounds, but Asomugha was a first round pick who may have had an off year.
Before he signs with a new team and that cannot happen until a new CBA is signed, said team will have to try and figure out which it is. Is Nnamdi over the hill, unhappy in Oakland, or just suffering through a down year? For me the risk would be to high to sign a guy like this, but I am sure one of the 32 NFL teams will back up the Brinks truck to get him.
