The Creative Assembly, the development studio behind the Total War franchise, recently branched off from its long-running strategy franchise to work on an as-yet unseen Aliens game. Now, it seems the studio has plans to branch out even further.

This week, Creative Assembly announced that it has signed a deal to make more than one game based on the Warhammer property. Initially it was unclear whether or not THQ had sold off the right, but the company has since confirmed that the license is staying with THQ.

“With this year being our 25th anniversary it seems fitting for us to embark on such a dream project with such a well-established partner,” Tim Heaton, studio director at Creative Assembly said of the news. “The incredibly rich and detailed Warhammer world is something we grew up with, and has left an indelible imprint on us as both designers and gamers.

“We’ll be doing the Warhammer universe justice in a way that has never been attempted before. We’re bringing those 25 years of experience and expertise in extremely high-scoring games to bear, delivering a Warhammer experience that videogamers will absolutely love.”

Currently, The Creative Assembly is known to be working on Rome 2: Total War and a game based on the Alien franchise, whose rights belong to its parent company, Sega.

Warhammer 40K: Space Marine was the last game we’ve seen from the franchise. An MMO was at one point in the works, but THQ, currently in dire financial straits, announced earlier this year that the project has been canceled.
