The beer can house in Houston wasn’t built to attract attention but that’s exactly what it’s getting. The unique landmark has become a Texas tourist favorite over the last few years.
According to the Huffington Post, the beer can house was built by John Milkovisch in the 1970s. Milkovisch wanted to add aluminum siding to his home but didn’t want to go broke doing it. So, he turned to a material that was cheap and readily available: Beer cans.
Milkovisch didn’t think there was anything special about his house and was surprised to find people standing on the sidewalk starring his home. Milkovisch passed away in the 1980s but the house was purchased and preserved by the non-profit group Orange Show Center for Visionary Art.
Ruben Guevara, who is in charge of the restoration project, told Seattle PI: “The funny thing is that it wasn’t… to attract attention… He said himself that if there was a house similar to this a block away, he wouldn’t take the time to go look at it. He had no idea what was the fascination about what he was doing.”
Guevara said that Milkovisch collected beer cans for years without a project in mind. When he decided to add aluminum siding to his house, he had a huge stash at his disposal. In total, Milkovisch used about 50,000 cans to finish his project.
Guevara said: “He drank a lot of beer, him and (his wife) Mary, and he collected all the beer cans that he would drink. He stored them because he knew he was going to use them, but he didn’t know for what.”
