New York, NY – Ricky Martin’s new show — yes, a television show — is set to appear on NBC in 2013. But don’t go thinking this is another throwaway dance talent contest; rather, the ‘Livin’ la Vida Loca’ singer is producing, writing, and staring in a new “dramedy” series for the network, one that tackles social issues with humor.

Ricky Martin’s new show will mean the Latin superstar will have to swap stage for screen. The singer-cum-actor is currently performing on Broadway in Evita , with his final bow in the production scheduled for January 26.

In an interview on Friday with Associated Press , Martin talked about his future plans, which include two television series and a children’s book:

“It’s about growing. It’s a moment in my life where I just need to absorb and be surrounded by amazing actors and musicians and grow as an entertainer. I think this is going to be an amazing year for that.”

Admittedly, the Grammy-winning performer is still dabbling in at least one TV talent contest, the genre which would seem to be his natural home; after leaving Evita , the star will travel down under to join the second season of the Australian version of The Voice .

However, Martin has already warned he won’t be crushing dreams, a la Simon Cowell. Speaking at an M.A.C. Viva Glam event for Saturday’s World AIDS Day, the 40-year-old entertainer stated:

“I don’t believe in tough love. I believe in love, and I believe in being nurturing to new talented men and women.”

In the rest of his spare time, the father of four-year-old twins Matteo and Valentino will be writing his second book for kids, with inspiration drawn from his own life:

“I think it’s time to write about things that I’ve been through with my kids that I’m sure many daddys out there will understand.”

The book will reportedly focus on self-esteem and is due for release next summer.
