Games that didn’t make the cut in Wii Sports Resort

I may have resat my math GCSE twice in high school, but even I know every North American has purchased twenty-three and a quarter copies of Wii Sports Resort . That’s just SCIENCE, people. This means you will all be grimly familiar with the twelve games in Nintendo’s summery minigame compilation. There’s the good (swordfighting, archery), the bad (basketball, frisbee), and the pointless (wakeboarding).

But there could have been so much more to Resort . In an email interview with Game|Life, producer Katsuya Eguchi reveals that fishing and a water slide were also considered. Fishing? The only videogame that should deal with fishing as a minigame is Zelda . That’s, like, the law . A water slide sounds hella fun, though.

Eguchi also said that kendama, an old-fashioned Japanese toy, very nearly made it. Having now looked up kendama , I have no clue whatsoever how that would have worked. Still, it’s always fun learning about what’s left on the cutting-room floor after a game is finished, especially where Nintendo titles are concerned. Maybe we’ll get kendama in the inevitable third game .
