Geno Smith fired his agents shortly after he was drafted by the New York Jets in the second round.
Why? Well, Smith thought he deserved to be the No.1 pick, not the 39th.
According to USA Today , Smith fired his agents shortly after the draft because he wasn’t picked in the first round.
Jets general manager John Idzik said that he understood Smith’s frustration with slipping to the second round but assured the young quarterback that the spotlight will be plenty bright in New York.
Idzik said : “If you’re a first-round quarterback — first-round any position – the spotlight is a little bit brighter… Him coming in as a second rounder, perhaps it’s a little dim, but being that he’s in the New York market, he’s at a high profile position, I think he’s going to be center stage regardless.”
Smith will hire a new agent before he signs a contract with the New York Jets but it probably won’t help the negotiations. The new CBA rules leave little room for negotiations with rookie players. On the bright side, the 39th pick last year, Janoris Jenkin of the Rams, inked a $5 million four-year deal after the draft.
