Johannesburg, South Africa – South African law enforcement discovered a bloodied cricket bat at the home of Oscar Pistorius following the brutal murder of 29-year-old Reeva Steenkamp, his girlfriend, on Valentine’s Day.
Police sources told the AFP that the woman’s skull had been “crushed” during the incident.
It’s unknown at the moment if the bat was used to assault Steenkamp , who was also shot four times, but police are currently investigating.
Officials have dismissed any notion that the assault could have been a result of mistaken identity.
“The suspicion is that the first shot, in the bedroom, hit her in the hip. She then ran and hid herself in the toilet… He fire three more shots,” a source said.
Arnold Pistorius, Oscar Pistorius’ uncle, said in a statement,
“We are in a state of total shock – firstly about the tragic death of Reeva who we had all got to know well and care for deeply over the last few months… All of us saw at first hand how close she had become to Oscar during that time and how happy they were… We have no doubt there is no substance to the allegation and that the state’s own case, including its own forensic evidence, strongly refutes any possibility of a premeditated murder or indeed any murder at all.”
Eye Witness News reported that the police had no other suspects and that Oscar Pistorius and Reeva Steenkamp were the only people in the home at the time.
