Confetti, loud music, leotards, 80s music, and the birthday girl doing splits in front of hundreds of people. Yeah, that sounds like your typical 70th birthday party. Betsy Johnson celebrated her Sweet 70 today at New York Fashion Week with the help of her friend Cyndi Lauper and a crowd singing “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun.”
The birthday also included a never ending stream of models, a baby pig, and Johnson’s daughter Lulu jumping out of a birthday cake. And yes, in case you were wondering, 70-year-old Betsey Johnson can still do a cartwheel into the splits.
Johnson’s over-the-top designs has been a big hit in the music scene since the 1960s. Now, at 7o-years-old and in her 6th decade of designing, her influence is still seen in music. AJC reports that Britney Spears and Katy Perry are both fans of Betsey Johnson and last night Lil’ Kim showed up to help the fashion designer celebrate her birthday.
Johnson’s new collection included metallic saddle shoes, vibrant school girl uniforms, suitcases from the Jetsons, and crimped hair. The highlight of the show, however, was the tribute to Johnson’s most famous looks. According to Rolling Stone the models walked the runway as wild punk-ballerinas, Minnie Mouse mimics, and neon bohemian dresses.
