National Tequila Day 2013 falls on July 24 this year and yes, that’s a Wednesday. But don’t worry, tomorrow is National Call in sick to work day.
OK, so that holiday doesn’t exist. But National Tequila Day certainly does. People around the country will be sipping on Margaritas today in order to celebrate the spirit.
But why? The origins aren’t really clear (it was probably started by a tequila company) but that doesn’t mean that you can’t enjoy the unofficial drinking holiday. If you really need a reason, how about this: Jennifer Lopez and Amelia Earhart were born today.
OK, so now that we have our reason let’s get down to the celebrating. And since no one has figured out a way to pour a cocktail through a computer screen, here are ten facts in honor of National Tequila Day 2013.
- Unlike most beers and liquors, Tequila is aged on the plant and not in the cask. Ask Men notes that tequila is derived from the blue agave plant which takes about 8 years to mature. A fully grown blue agave heart resembles a pineapple but can weigh more than 100 pounds.
- Tequila is only made in Mexico. Like champagne, true tequila can only come from certain parts of the world.
- Tequila must contain 51% blue agave. Tequila is highly regulated in Mexico but there are still several varieties and classes. Delish reports that a tequila that is not made with 100% tequila is called a “mixto.”
- According to the Guinness Book of World Records , the most expensive bottle of tequila ever sold was a Platinum & White Gold Tequila bottle was sold by Tequila Ley. The bottle was sold for $225,000 to a private collector in 2006.
- While were on the topic of excess, the world’s largest margarita contained more than 8,500 gallons. And yes, it was achieved by the Margaritaville in Las Vegas.
