For the first time in 20 years, Nirvana is going to be taking the stage tonight for a benefit concert to aid the victims of Superstorm Sandy. Kurt Cobain will be replaced by none other than former Beatle Sir Paul McCartney. McCartney will join Foo Fighters singer Dave Grohl, Pat Smear, and Krist Novoselic December 12 at Madison Square Garden.
According to a report in The Sun , Grohl had been calling McCartney to join him on stage and “jam with some mates.” It was last week when McCartney decided to take him up on the invitation. Supposedly McCartney was unaware that the “mates” Grohl was referring to were his old bandmates from Nirvana.
McCartney had said of the Nirvana boys:
“I didn’t really know who they were. They are saying how good it is to be back together. I said ‘Whoa? You guys haven’t played together for all that time?’ And somebody whispered to me ‘’That’s Nirvana. You’re Kurt.’ I couldn’t believe it.”
Nirvana was one of the premiere grunge bands to take the world by storm in the early 90s. Their rise to fame ended when the band’s lead singer, Kurt Cobain , took his own life with a shotgun in 1994. The band broke up at that point, with only Grohl going on to make a name for himself in the industry by creating Foo Fighters.
The concert tonight will also feature Bon Jovi, Bruce Springsteen, Green Day, The Rolling Stones, The Who, and Kanye West. It is expected to bring in several million dollars to aid the victims of the storm.
