The Rolling Stones have confirmed that they will headline this year’s Glastonbury festival when it takes place in England this summer.

Alongside the English rockers, Arctic Monkeys and Mumford & Sons will also top the billing at what is regarded as the quintessential music festival in the country.

It’s been common knowledge that The Rolling Stones would be headlining the event for some time, but it was finally officially announced on Wednesday evening by Glastonbury’s official website.

Earlier this month, Serge Pizzorno, the guitarist for the rock band Kasabian, who are playing a Hard Rock Calling in London on the same weekend, stated, “I hope ours is the most talked about performance of the weekend, but that would be a miracle because The Rolling Stones are playing Glastonbury.”

Meanwhile, Mick Jagger, the leader singer for the band, previously teased that they might be playing the festival, stating, “There are other things in the world, you know, apart from Glastonbury. But then again, Glastonbury is very important. It seems to be very important to my children – highlight of the year!”

Guitarist Ronnie Wood had also responded, “Wouldn’t it be nice?” when asked whether they might be playing the event.

Wood then added, “We’ve got a meeting next month and that’s going to be my first question to them. It’s something I’ve always been interested in. I’m going to twist their arms. I’ve got lots of high hopes this year, now that we’re all rehearsed – let’s get it cracking this summer!”

Other acts who wil be playing the festival include Portishead, Kenny Rogers, Public Enemy, and The XX. Glastonbury Festival has been taking place in Somerset, England, since 1970 and sees dance, comedy, theatre, circus and cabaret acts, as well as other artists gather for the four-day event.

Are you going to Glastonbury? Do you think The Rolling Stones are too old to be headlining it?
