Vince Young’s comeback bid is starting with some contrition from the former NFL star, who sent a letter of apology to former coach Jeff Fisher for his behavior with the team.
It was Fisher who gave Young his first chance to start in the NFL as a member of the Tennessee Titans after a stellar career at the University of Texas. Though Young had some solids seasons as a duel-threat running and throwing quarterback for the Titans, he also clashed often with Fisher and was punished for attitude problems.
Now that Vince Young is trying to make a comeback after sitting out the 2012 season, he’s starting by saying he’s sorry to Jeff Fisher .
Young talked about his letter of apology with The NFL Network, saying he was sorry for the way he acted while on the Titans, including a locker room argument in 2010.
“I definitely wanted to apologize for the things that I did,” Young said. “Letting him know about the frustrations, all the different things that were going on in my life at the time and wanted him to know I really did appreciate him trying to make me become one of those type of leaders on the team and a successful quarterback.”
Young added that the was not paying attention and taking his frustrations out on others on the team.
Young had a shot at the NFL last year after being signed by the Buffalo Bills, but was cut before the end of training camp in favor of Tavaris Jackson. Since his forced hiatus from the NFL, Vince Young’s off-the-field troubles have come to light, including mounting debts.
One of the revelations was that Young took out a $300,000 loan to pay for an extravagant birthday party for himself.
“I don’t really feel like it was my game. I just really feel like (it was) some of the off-the-field issues,” Young said. “I really feel like teams don’t want their quarterback to be in a position where they’re distracted.
“I was young at the time and I put my trust in a lot of people,” Young said .”I was getting taken advantage of. Basically I’m the victim of the situation. Just got to clean up that mess, just to let teams know I’m a little bit more mature than I used to be. I’ve grown a whole lot.”
Vince Young is doing more than apologizing to Jeff Fisher to get his NFL comeback started. The quarterback is also working to finish his degree from Texas and is planning to work out at the school’s pro day on March 26.
