I know that I called the incredible comeback of the Omaha Nighthawks in their UFL debut against the Hartford Colonials the best game in UFL history, but maybe I spoke a little soon. Saturday night’s contest between the Florida Tuskers at the Sacramento Mountain Lions may just go down as the best game in this league’s short history. For the first time ever, and only second time overall the Florida Tuskers lost. Of course if every game is better than its predecessor the people that run this league and these teams are doing their jobs, and doing them well.
This game was a seesaw match. With the commentators and UFL fans in person and watching in their homes kept waiting for the Tusker offense to wake up. The one complaint here would be that the TV commentators kept talking about the fatigue of the Tuskers given they had back to back west coast trips. However in a league that will play only eight games, and given no pre-season games the team and all of the players have got to be jacked up for each and every contest. Fatigue in week two is unacceptable.
The story of the game was Sacramento Mountain Lions QB Daunte Culpepper. He threw for 374 yards and three TD’s, the final coming in the final minute of the game to lead his team to a 24-20 victory in their home opener and debut at a new home stadium. He spread the ball around a lot hitting RB Cory Ross eight times, and former Tuskers wide out Taye Biddle three separate times.
On the Tuskers end, the offense never seemed to get into a grove. Reining UFL MVP QB Brooks Bollinger did go 23-41 for 328 yards and a touch down. What that tells us is being RB in this league, one better be able to catch a pass because not a lot of yards are gained on the ground.
