Lindsey Vonn underwent knee surgery in Vail, Colorado Sunday.
The four-time overall World Cup champion tore her anterior cruciate and medial collateral ligaments in a super-G crash in Schladming, Austria last week. Vonn also broke a bone in her lower leg. Tiger Woods, who is reportedly dating Vonn, loaned the 28-year-old his private jet so she could fly from Schladming to Vail for the surgery. Vonn, however, has said that she and Woods are just friends.
A source familiar with the situation said the surgery “went well.” The source spoke on condition of anonymity because an official announcement was scheduled for later in the day.
According to USA Today , the surgery was performed by Dr. William Sterett , a physician for the US ski team. Sterett said he wouldn’t set a date for Vonn’s return to skiing, but other doctors said she could be sidelined for up to eight months.
Shortly after the crash, Vonn said she was planning to work as hard as possible to represent the US in the Sochi Olympics next year.
According to The Washington Post , Vonn’s short-term goal is to be ready for the World Cup speed races in Lake Louise, Alberta, in late November or early December. She has won 14 times at Lake Louise, prompting it to be known as “Lake Lindsey.”
Lindsey Vonn is one of only two female skiers to win four overall World Cup championships — with the other being Annemarie Moser-Proll — and won three consecutive championships from 2008 to 2010. She also won the championship last year.
