Justin Timberlake debuted his new single on Friday titled “Take Back The Night” . Now Timberlake may be in some legal trouble after releasing the track, as it’s apparently already being used and has a completely different connotation than what the song suggests.
A well-known foundation called Take Back the Night was reportedly very surprised when they heard Timberlake’s new track. Take Back the Night is a foundation, which “serves to create safe communities and respectful relationships through awareness events and initiatives.”
The foundation also: “[seeks] to end sexual assault, domestic violence, dating violence, sexual abuse and all other forms of sexual violence.”
We could see how that might be a conflict of interest, and according to reports so does the organization. According to Radar Online , Take Back the Night is not taking this lightly. Instead they’re threatening to take legal action upon Timberlake.
In a statement, Executive Director of Take Back the Night Foundation, Katherine Koestner said to Radar Online about Timberlake’s etiquette:
“Everyone at Take Back the Night is really shocked, because normally, we get asked when people want to use the name.”
“Normally entities as large as Justin Timberlake do very kind and thoughtful things to support our cause.” Although Timberlake was never involved in Take Back the Night, he has supported various charities including, Music for Relief, Oxfam, Habitat For Humanity, Childwatch, Stand Up To Cancer, Shriners Hospitals for Children, and THORN.
In 2001 Timberlake formed his own foundation called The Justin Timberlake Foundation.
When Koestner of Take Back the Night foundation was asked about the song’s content she had this to say:
“The lyrics are definitely very sexual and not at all clearly anti-sexual violence. ‘Use me,’ for example, is not a great phrase for anyone affiliated with the organization.”
