A Dredd sequel has been announced, but probably not the way that you were hoping, according to a recent report from IGN .
According to the website, the continuation of 2012’s well-received apology for the 1995 Sly Stallone disaster will come in the form of a comic book .
Nice, yes, but hardly a chance to see Karl Urban and Olivia Thirlby kicking butt again in the dystopian world of Mega City.
The news came this month with the release of a poster from 2000AD in which Judge Dredd, doing his best Karl Urban, points a gun at us with the words, “Did someone mention a sequel?” above the image.
IGN noted that the continuation should hit shelves in September of this year, which means San Diego Comic-Con will be one to watch from Mr. Judge-Jury-Executioner’s publishing house.
Now you’ll notice we said Dredd 2012 was well-received, but we did not say it was a box office hit. That’s because it wasn’t.
On a $50 million budget, the film couldn’t muster more than $36 million in worldwide take , according to the numbers at Box Office Mojo .
But don’t cry too hard for director Pete Travis’ cast and crew. January brought strong reports from the UK, which had already been a box office stronghold dating back to the film’s overseas release in September 2012 .
According to the first home video numbers, the movie sold 650,000 copies on Blu-ray and DVD its first week and bumped Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises from the top spot.
Producers quickly quelled fans’ hopes, however, by informing the public that a Dredd sequel was still unlikely . Prior to the theatrical release, 2000AD had released a prequel comic. Watch the three-minute motion version here:
The movie hashed out in graphic detail what happened next to Ma-Ma (Lena Headey), so you may want to give it another watch before picking up September’s release.
