Alicia Keys said she wanted to develop learning tools for children after having her son-now the musician is launching a kids app.
Keys is releasing “The Journals of Mama Mae and LeeLee” which tells of a New York City girl and her sage grandmother’s relationship. The interactive app, which Keys produced the music for, will be released on Thursday and sold for $3.99, the Associated Press reported .
The Grammy Award winner spoke with the media on Wednesday about the new project:
“It’s a new adventure for me, and I’m really enjoying it.”
The basis of the app loosely ties to the singer’s relationship she has with her grandmother. The app is set in LeeLee’s bedroom and it allows users to sit in the room, while reading books, playing music, and writing in their journals.
Keys says it greatly reminds her of how she grew up in New York, the city where the singer was born:
“It does remind me of my world. The piano, the journal, music’s such a big part of my life, the city, all of that.”
The app is being launched by the singer’s company AK Worldwide and Bento Box Interactive. According to the singer, the great inspiration for creating the app was raising her 2-year-old son, Egypt:
“I was just getting introduced to kind of the TV shows and the DVDs and all the things you start kind of introducing your kids to, and I thought how cool it would be to be a part of something that really allows them to hear music from different places, different cultures, different sounds. That’s what we’re able to do with this.”
The singer has also been in the news recently with the release of her “Girl on Fire” video and album, Entertainment Weekly reported .
