The Boston Bruins-Tampa Bay Lightning game scheduled for Saturday night has been canceled as a blizzard has dropped several feet of snow across New England.

The game was canceled when Massachusetts declared a state of emergency, making it illegal for non-essential employees to be found on the roads, ESPN reported.

On Saturday afternoon, the Bruins released this statement :

“The NHL announced today, February 9, that Saturday’s game between the Tampa Bay Lightning and Boston Bruins at the TD Garden, NHL Game No. 154, has been postponed due to the continuing, weather-related State of Emergency that remains in effect in Boston.

“A make-up date will be announced as soon as it can be confirmed.

“Although both Clubs and the assigned on-ice officials are in Boston, travel conditions remain too hazardous for fans, security personnel and TD Garden staff to get to the arena.”

The Boston area received more than two feet of snow between Friday night and Saturday morning. Winter Storm Nemo , which is believed to be stronger than a historic 1978 blizzard to strike New England, has already left 650,000 without power and caused the death of at least one person.

The blizzard also forced the closure of many roads along the corridor between Boston and New York City, home to more than 25 million people.

The Bruins-Lightning game had originally been scheduled for 1 pm, but the start time was pushed back to 7 pm in an effort to avoid the worst of the blizzard Nemo had brought in. The Bruins are back in action on Sunday in Buffalo, while Tampa travels to New York on Sunday to take on the Rangers.
