2010 San Diego Chargers Preview

This team has won 67 regular season games over the last three years, and that is the third best win total in the NFL. However success for this team will be what they do in January. After so much regular season success, it has become an annual party to watch the San Diego Chargers falter in the playoffs. Anything less than a Super Bowl birth will be looked upon as a failure. Sure the AFC West has improved, but those teams do match up very well against the Chargers.

The offense will be led by QB Phillip Rivers, and the new look Charger backfield will feature Ryan Matthews and Darren Sproles. The WR Corps is made up of Malcom Floyd, Craig Davis, whoever takes over for Vincent Jackson, and TE Antonio Gates. All in all it is a pretty good unit. The O Line is set, and has at least two potential pro bowlers.

On defense, I am a little concerned that the season will start without NT Jamal Williams. He was a staple of their 3-4 attack. All in all up front they are slightly above the NFL average. The four linebackers are Shawne Merriman, Brandon Siler, Stephen Cooper, and Shaun Phillips. They are pretty good and they added Larry English via the draft in 2009. Quentin Jammer and Antoine Cason are the starting CB’s with Eric Weddle and Steve Gregory are the deep guys.

On special teams Nate Kaeding will be the kicker with Mike Seifres handling the punting duties. Darren Sproles may return both kicks and punts, but if the offense needs him they may look for other options there.
