Lindsay Lohan is just like Marilyn Monroe , or so claims The Canyons director Paul Schrader.
The director worked with the 27-year-old actress before she headed off to a summer stint in court-ordered rehab. Schrader claims that Lohan shares some “remarkable” similarities to the blonde bombshell.
In a Film Comment essay, Paul Schrader says Lohan’s similarities focus on both the good and bad parts of Monroe’s own life. The acclaimed director writes:
“Similarities? Tardiness, unpredictability, tantrums, absences, neediness, psychodrama—-yes, all that, but something more, that thing that keeps you watching someone on screen, that thing you can’t take your eyes off of, that magic, that mystery.”
Speaking about the “LiLo phenomenon” and Marilyn Monroe, he continues:
So what type of similarities do Lindsay Lohan and Marilyn Monroe share? Shrader points to their fights with depression, an unhappy love life, addiction to drugs and alcohol, and the constant need for the public spotlight.
He says of what makes Lohan and Monroe special:
“To be successful, a performer controls the balance between the professional and personal, that is, he or she makes it seem like the professional is personal. It is the lack of this control that gives performers like Monroe and Lohan (and others) their unique attraction. We sense that the actress is not performing, that we are watching life itself. We call them ‘troubled,’ ‘tormented,’ ‘train wrecks’ but we can’t turn away. We can’t stop watching.”
So how does Paul Schrader rate each stars acting abilities? He says Lohan has more “natural acting talent.”
Schrader warns that just like Marilyn Monroe the still young Lindsay Lohan is incapable of acting in her roles without experiencing them first. It is that need to “feel” her roles that has at least in part fueled Lohan’s self destructive behavior.
