Captain America: Civil War revealed its first trailer not too long ago and set the Internet ablaze. Directors Joe and Anthony Russo launched and promoted a new film studio in Beijing, China, this past week, while in between editing and preparing for reshoots in January of 2016. During an interview , the two filmmakers began discussing details of their upcoming film.

The Russo brothers discussed Captain America’s relationships with the Winter Soldier and Black Widow, whether or not fans will finally be able to see the hero in his classic scale mail suit (which was recently glimpsed in promotional art), some of the challenges that actor Chris Evans faced on set while filming, how the directors approached introducing Spider-Man into the Marvel Cinematic Universe as well as his relationship with his Aunt May, and how high stakes will be for the heroes in Civil War and both Infinity War movies.

“For us, we’ve always interpreted the relationship as two brothers. They’re very close characters, they have a relationship with each other that is very deep. The bond between them is very strong, which is what motivates the storytelling. These are both characters that came from nothing. Captain America was basically an orphan, and Bucky’s family took him in. When he was sleep for several years, he lost everything that was dear to him. And when he took the serum and became Captain America, he gave away a large part of himself for a patriotic cause. So, you have a character who is searching for the only thing that he has left from his past… and that’s Bucky. And people interpreted that relationship all kinds of ways and it’s great to see people argue about it what that relationship means to them.”

There was some recent Civil War promo artwork that seems to confirm Captain America wearing a new suit with the classic scale mail design, according to Comic Book Movie . Both directors were then asked if audiences will actually see it in the movie.

“It is a new costume,” said Anthony Russo, as both he and his brother smiled.

“We were trying to pull forward the work that we had done in Captain America: The Winter Soldier on Cap. So, the innovations that we made to his costume in that form are very much the tonal texture that we are pulling forward. Civil War is very much connected and rooted in The Winter Soldier . So, as far as the specifics of the costume, we don’t want to give too much away, but it is a new costume slightly different from what you’ve seen before. And it’s grounded in that Winter Soldier tone.”

The topic of the new version of Spider-Man came up, and the brothers were asked how Spidey will be different from the previous versions portrayed by actors Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield.

“This is a completely new version of Spider-Man that’s introduced in Civil War ,” answered Anthony Russo.

Casting a young actor to portray Peter Parker was important to everyone involved. Missing the youthful element of the character still being in high school while having these powers, something that has not been extremely present in the previous Spider-Man films. The goal of the Russo’s was to take the character and make him and everything surrounding him contemporary, whether it be his relationship with his Aunt May or how he views society and himself.

“The stakes of both Civil War and the Avengers: Infinity War movies are gonna be very high, and there will be a price to pay for a lot of characters,” replied Joe Russo, when asked about the stakes in this new film. They even mentioned that audiences should expect to be shocked by what goes down in the film.

“As filmmakers, we believe in stakes,” replied Joe. “You can’t have good storytelling without strong stakes. So, there will be a price to pay in Civil War .”
