English Prime Minister has defied the orders of the seminal English pop act, The Smiths , by continuing to listen to their work.
Johnny Marr, the group’s guitarist, banned the Conservative leader in 2010 from liking the Manchester artists. After hearing of the politicians admiration for his work, Marr tweeted, “David Cameron, stop saying that you like The Smiths, no you don’t. I forbid you to like it.”
Morrissey, the lead singer of the band who has been at odds with Marr since their split in 1987, praised and supported his decision to criticise Cameron.
However, when talking to BBC News Cameron revealed that he still listens to their music, saying, “I’ve now got Johnny Marr and other members of the band saying I’m not able to listen to The Smiths. When I’ve got the complete and full set, even then, I’m afraid, I will go on and listen to The Smiths.”
Marr added on the matter, “He’s entitled to like whatever he likes, as long as he doesn’t say it. It’s a good song. I do forbid him to like it. He shouldn’t like us because we’re not his kind of people.”
The Prime Minister of the British Isles is such a fervent supporter of the band that he even decided to select their hit single, “This Charming Man,” as one of his Desert Island Discs in 2006. Marr recently played The Smiths’ “Heaven Knows I’m Miserable Now” for the first time in 25 years.
