Michelle Obama ‘s speech at the opening night of the Democratic National Convention painted a portrait of President Barack Obama, showing that her husband is just like you.
The first lady took the stage at the DNC on Tuesday and delivered a speech aimed at reassuring voters that her husband still shares their values of hard work, perseverance, and optimism, reports The Huffington Post .
While speaking with voters about the Obama household in the early years, the first lady reminisced about how money was tight, and they were “so in love, and so in debt.”
Michelle spoke about how her husband pulled his favorite coffee table out of the trash and wore dress shoes a size too small but made no mention of Barack’s opponent.
In a speech that was likely her most political to date, the first lady stated:
“Today, after so many struggles and triumphs and moments that have tested my husband in ways I never could have imagined, I have seen firsthand that being president doesn’t change who you are – it reveals who you are.”
Michelle Obama’s speech built an attack on Romney without ever directly attacking him, instead speaking about student loans and rusted cars, saying that it was life experience that makes her husband appreciate the struggles of working Americans and also makes him the best candidate to keep working on them in November, according to Politico .
Barack’s wife appeared to complete the job of making an emotional connection between the incumbent president and voters, which the President has struggled to create. In a speech that was both biographical and political, her message was simple: that the Obama’s are just like you. Michelle stated that her husband’s unusual upbringing was mot much different than hers, saying:
“When Barack started telling me about his family – that’s when I knew I had found a kindred spirit, someone whose values and upbringing were so much like mine.”
The first lady went on to say that:
“I’ve gotten to see up close and personal what being president really looks like. At the end of the day, when it comes time to make that decision, as president, all you have to guide you are your values, and your vision, and the life experiences that make you who you are.”
Michelle Obama’s speech Tuesday night was her first of many, as she also plans to speak at the party’s African-American, Hispanic, and women’s causes as well as addressing a gay and lesbian luncheon. Michelle will also participate in an armed services event on Thursday with Jill Biden and worked to put together care packages for US troops serving overseas.
