Melky Cabrera has been suspended for 50 games by the MLB for the use of performance-enhancing drugs (PEDs).

The Giant outfielder tested positive to PEDs. His suspension will start immediately.

Cabrera did not deny using PEDs and issued an apology to his teammates and the Giants organization.

Cabrera said:

“My positive test was the result of my use of a substance I should not have used… I accept my suspension under the Joint Drug Program and will try to move on with my life. I am deeply sorry for my mistake and I apologize to my teammates, to the San Francisco Giants organization and to the fans for letting them down.”

MLB Trade Rumors reports that Cabrera, 28, earned his first All-Star Game nomination this year and was hoping that his breakout season would lead to some big leverage when he hits free agency this winter.

Cabrera will miss the remainder of the MLB season, but he could still play in the playoffs. According to Andrew Baggarly of CSNBayArea.com, Cabrera’s suspension will end four games into the playoffs. If the Giants, who are currently tied at the top of the NL West with a 64-53 record, manage to survive the first four games this Fall, Cabrera could find himself back in the lineup.

Now told by MLB officials that yes, Melky Cabrera is eligible for the playoffs after 50 games. So would have to sit out first four games.

After that, however, Melky Cabrera’s future in the MLB is uncertain.

Cabrera was hitting.353/.399/.530 with 11 homers this year and has expressed interest in signing a long term contract with the Giants.

Do you think the Giants will resign Melky?
