Twitter is now undeniably a bigger part of watching TV than ever before, with many fans taking to the social network to discuss the biggest shows on TV. However, there can only be one show that has garnered the most attention on the social network, and that’s Game of Thrones .
According to Digital Spy , HBO’s fantasy drama has beaten The Walking Dead to become the most popular show on Twitter in 2015. The data was measured by Currys PC World and found that between January 1, 2015, and December 31, 2015, 16,463,944 tweets were made about Game of Thrones . On the other hand, The Walking Dead saw 12,125,715 tweets, placing Game of Thrones firmly as the most tweeted about show on Twitter during 2015.
As part of the study, Currys PC World looked into some of the most popular shows on television, across a variety of different networks and streaming providers. While still lagging considerably behind Game of Thrones and The Walking Dead , Empire managed to pick up a total of 2.16 million tweets, while Netflix’s House of Cards attracted 1.65 million tweets. That being said, Frank Underwood’s show provided no match for The Great British Bake Off , which picked up 1.76 million tweets. In all, Currys PC World worked through over 45 million tweets in order to present their findings around the most popular shows on Twitter over the course of 2015.
Game of Thrones’prominence in those results is likely something to do with the show’s killer moments. One particularly large moment at the end of the most recent season of Game of Thronesis likely to have seen a large number of users take to Twitter to express their disbelief.
As reported by Winter is Coming , another likely explanation around Game of Thrones’ Twitter success comes down to many viewers watching the show all year round. Game of Thrones is a series well known for its binge watchers, with many viewers catching up with the entire series throughout the year. That continued viewing, coupled with the shock and awe of many of Game of Thrones’ biggest moments, is likely to go some way in explaining the success of HBO’s fantasy drama, which has beaten The Walking Dead as Twitter’s most talked about TV show.
Game of Thrones will enter its sixth season on April 24 when it airs on HBO. It’s at that point when the show is also likely to enter contention to be 2016’s most talked about show on Twitter. However, with the Walking Dead Season 6 finale airing last night, it’s going to be a tough fight for that spot.
In contrast to previous seasons of Game of Thrones , the sixth season of the show consists of largely new content that can’t be found in George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire series, which is largely because of the TV show catching up with the book series in terms of content. That being said, it will still adapt some content from the upcoming sixth novel in the series, The Winds of Winter , along with content from the fourth and fifth novels, A Feast for Crows and A Dance with Dragons .
The news that Game of Thrones was found as the most popular television show on Twitter during 2015 will likely be pleasing to the series’ showrunners, who will be hoping to build on that excitement in the run-up to the upcoming season. Whether the show will be able to keep hold of that title coming out of 2016 will largely depend on how well the new season performs now that it’s leaving George R.R. Martin’s hands. However, Game of Thrones is still likely to be one of Twitter’s most talked about TV shows for a good while to come.
