Steve martin wasn’t the only one moved to tears at last night’s Governors Awards 2013 at the Hollywood & Highland Center. Angelina Jolie and Angela Lansbury also had a weep when they received the auspicious honor.

Piero Tosi, the Italian costume designer also received an honorary oscar award but wasn’t able to make it to last night’s event. Angelina Jolie received the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award.

Jolie spoke about her late mother causing the likes of Brad Pitt and Louis Zamperini to well up with emotion as was clearly visible on their faces as they battled to hold back tears. Jolie said: “To stand here today means I did as she asked. And if she were alive, she’d be very proud.”

Martin Short and Tom Hanks were on hand to present Steve Martin with the honorary oscar. Short said in jest that it was: “the highest honour an actor can receive in mid-November.”

In typical Steve Martin fashion he kicked off his thank you speech with some jokes, as expected: “I can’t possibly express how I excited I am tonight, because the Botox is fresh.”

He continued with his banter but was clearly misty eyed and needed to cover his face at some points: “I knew I wasn’t going to make it through this speech. I read it to my dog this morning and wept,” Martin said.

The Inquisitr reported yesterday about how touched Steve Martin was when he found out he was to be honored with the award: “It goes back to the ’80s and ’90s — that all that work was actually registering with somebody in a kind of serious way,” he said.

He also spoke about his early work nostalgically: “I and all the people I worked with, we took it very seriously and we worried a lot about it, so it’s quite a compliment to have it regarded in some way. It’s quite an honor.”

The Governors Awards were not televised and were for the most part a private if not high profile affair. Portions from the ceremony are to be included in the Acedemy Awards telecast in March 2014.
