You might remember a viral video a while back that featured Snoop Dogg narrating a Planet Earth video in which a group of river otters taking a crocodile head on. It’s a hilarious narration that puts other documentaries to shame. Watch the video below.
Since that time, he’s done several other videos, including narration of tree frogs mating on Jimmy Kimmel Live! and a squirrel winning the battle with a snake . Planet Earth hit the ground running with this promotion and created two episodes with Snoop as the narrator. They called it Plizzanet Earth .
Before long, a petition was put out on the internet in an effort to convince Snoop Dogg to recognize his “true calling” and create his very own documentary series in which he narrates the happenings of wildlife. The petition titled “Get Snoop Dogg to Narrate Whole Season of Planet Earth” began on Change.org, and it was met with wild success . Even Snoop Dogg himself signed it. There are currently more than 65,000 signatures on the document. The goal was to reach 75,000, but it looks like Planet Earth and its newest rapper friend have already decided to get the show on the road.
They’ll be calling the new series Planet Snoop . It will run from the rapper’s media platform Merry Jane, and the first episode will be called “Squirrel vs. Snake.” He’s already developed a sneak peek, in which he says things like, “This squirrel is hard. What gang he from?” and “If he can bust a nut, you know he can bust a snake head open, no problem.” You can view the first episode on the Merry Jane website.
The Merry Jane website is calling Snoop “everyone’s favorite nature documentary narrator.” Favorite might be pushing it, since esteemed filmmaker and naturalist David Attenborough has been the narrator of the Emmy Award-winning Planet Earth , the nature series that airs on BBC. Attenborough has won several awards for his work and returns season after season by popular demand.
But, in short increments, there’s no denying that Snoop Dogg is pretty entertaining. We might not be able to listen to him quite as long as Attenborough’s mesmerizing tones, but he’s good for at least a few minutes of laughs.
It’s important to note that this segment of Planet Earth may not be as family friendly as some of the other episodes. It contains some fairly mature and profane language. The series is sure to be hilarious, but it may be best to keep the kids out of the room while watching it at home.
The Merry Jane website is Snoop’s platform for everything pot-related. It discusses current news and interest pieces regarding the recreational drug. With Planet Snoop airing on this website, it’s a slightly different approach to what’s usually published there. It’s no wonder that the material may be rated a little higher than PG.
If there’s one downside to the new series, it’s the fact that the producers opted to use a laugh track. It’s a little distracting and cheesy to listen to canned voices laughing at Snoop’s antics. It also takes away from the natural parody. Part of what makes the act so funny is the rapper’s voice and slang in the background of natural scenes. When you expect a posh, British character to narrate, you get a rapper. Perhaps it could have been left in its natural form to give more contrast and improve the overall appeal.
Snoop Dogg will continue narrating these video snippets over the next series of Planet Earth . Stay tuned if you love the rapper’s take on a classic documentary series.
