Warner Bros. had intended for this to be the first release of a trailer for Suicide Squad , but because that other trailer was leaked at San Diego Comic Con many months ago, this won’t come as much of a treat. That’s really a shame, because this trailer is a thrill ride in itself and, even better, it gives each character their spotlight, though one character in particular stands out among the rest. Suicide Squad , directed by David Ayer, is adapted from the comic book by John Ostrander and follows that story of a secret government agency enlisting convicted supervillains to complete a highly dangerous black ops mission. Of course, if they survive, they will each be granted clemency.
Only One Song Could Fit So Perfectly With The Suicide Squad Trailer
Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody” fits so perfectly with this trailer that it seems it could have been written just for this film, if it hadn’t been released decades earlier. Of course, we all know that the song was made famous by another film and, much like Wayne’s World , this Suicide Squad trailer emphasizes the idea that these dangerous criminals are going to have to come together as a team, if they have any hope of completing their mission. It’s all about teamwork.
Speaking of the team, one would expect Jared Leto’s Joker to carry audiences through this trailer, making his presence the key thrill for expectant fans, but Ayer wisely went another route. Joker isn’t seen until midway through the Suicide Squad video, as each villain is given his or her moment in the spotlight.
One character does carry viewers through this look at Suicide Squad . Margot Robbie shines as Harley Quinn and it’s her presence that really puts the tease in this teaser. The trailer was created to share the dark and violent atmosphere of the full feature film, letting fans know that they can expect more of the same in theaters and, if Harley Quinn is to be as quintessential to the story as this look implies, it seems that violence won’t be the only thing with a sharp edge to it.
Jared Leto’s Joker Caused A Frenzy Of Fear On The Set, Reports David Ayer
Many fans already know that Leto really threw himself into his Suicide Squad role, remaining in character even when the cameras weren’t rolling and sending gag gifts to his co-stars, but director David Ayer revealed it went much farther than that. The film’s director reports that Jared’s demeanor was so chilling and similar to the Joker character that much of the film crew would keep their distance from the actor as much as possible.
“Big time. The hairs stand up on the back of your neck,” Ayer replied, when asked if he was personally affected by Leto’s behavior.
While he may have been offset by the way in which Jared seemed consumed by his Suicide Squad character, David says that he was still supportive. He says, as a director, he’s happy to see an actor find the best way to become his or her character.
“I love helping actors find what methodology works best for them,” Ayer continued. “It’s like tailoring a suit — it’s not one size fits all. But it really made an event when he would show up on set. There was almost a pageantry to him, which did translate into the character and the power on screen he has.”
It certainly seems Jared Leto has found his methodology. Margot Robbie and her dead rat can attest to that, as well as Will Smith and his bullets, which were both gifts to Leto’s co-stars.
Suicide Squad is expected to hit theaters on August 5.
