The New Orleans Hornets on Sunday made a play for Orlando Magic forward Ryan Anderson. According to insiders the teams have agreed on a sign-and-trade agreement that will allow Anderson to play alongside Hornet’s big-time rookie Anthony Davis.
As part of the deal the Orlando Magic will receive Hornets center Gustavo Ayon.
Anderson and the New Orleans Hornets were already in talks after Anderson became a restricted free agent but sources claim talks between the Magic and Hornets moved forward faster than expected when Orlando said they would not match any offers.
Ryan Anderson is now expected to sign a four-year deal worth $34-$36 million.
Last season Anderson averaged 16.1 points with 7.7 rebounds while starting in 61 games for the Orlando Magic. On the reverse side Ayon started 24 games for the Hornets while averaging 5.9 points and 4.9 rebounds during 20.1 minutes per game.
The sign-and-trade agreement can not be completed until Wednesday when the league lifts it’s “no business” moratorium for the 2012-2013 season.
The Hornets can now turn their attention towards restricted free agent Eric Gordon who has been offered a four-year, $60 million contract from the Phoenix Suns.
With new big men moving onto the roster it is all but certain that free agents Chris Kaman and Carl Landry will move on to new homes in the NBA.
Last season Magic fans witnessed Ryan Anderson earn the “most improved player” award after shooting 44% from the field which included 39% from 3-point range.
