The Amazing Spider-Man won’t open in the United States until Tuesday at midnight but it has already started making some serious bank overseas. The action packed reboot to the popular series has earned $50.2 million in 13 overseas markets.
Phil Contrino of BoxOffice.com called the weekend debut a “very healthy start.”
Among the countries already showcasing The Amazing Spider-Man are India, Korea and Japan.
The films biggest opening was in India where it became the biggest opening of all-time for a Hollywood produced film, even besting The Avengers. In Japan the movie accounted for nearly all of the country’s Saturday and Sunday ticket sales.
While an international hit often means domestic success that isn’t always the case, Battleship debuts with strong numbers overseas and because a laughable excuse for an action flick in the United States.
In India the new flick even managed to best the Tobey Maguire helmed Spider-Man 3 while in Vietnam it beat out the entire run of the same sequel.
Speaking of the Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone reboot David Mumpower of Box Office Prophets added:
“For whatever reason, the [original] Spider-Man trilogy never performed quite as dominantly in the international marketplace.…For The Amazing Spider-Man to launch like this internationally is a tremendous relief for Sony.”
In one and a half days The Amazing Spider-Man will debut in the United States and if India, Japan and other countries are any indication the movie will be a $200+ million hit before the end of July.
