Mother Of Newborn Buried Alive Arrested In Compton

The mother of the newborn child that was buried alive and found more than a week ago was reportedly arrested by authorities late last week.

Sgt. Bob Boese of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement on Sunday that the woman has been arrested, although he did not disclose any further details.

Boese said that the arrest was the result of joint efforts by the public and the media coverage of the incident. He added that the investigation is still ongoing, and more details will be released in a press conference on Monday.

On November 27, the day after Thanksgiving, the baby was found buried alive under several pieces of asphalt and concrete debris at the roadside of a popular Compton bike path.

The Compton sheriff’s station received reports of a crying baby on 136th Street and Slater Avenue near a riverbed. Residents Evangelina McCrary and her sister, Angelica Blount, were taking their daily walk in the area when they heard muffled sounds of a crying baby. At first, Blount thought the noise was coming from a cat when her sister first called her attention about the cries. McCrary said that she became distraught when she heard the baby’s wails. Two deputies rushed to the scene at around 4:00 p.m. and searched the area.

“The cry that I heard, as a father, was more of a cry for help, I’m hungry, but not like I’m injured and hurt,” said Deputy Adam Collette in an earlier interview .

“I know what I was hearing, but I didn’t believe it,” he added.

Sgt. Marvin Jaramilla of the Sheriff’s department special victims unit said that Collette and his partner, Deputy David Perry, located the baby buried “under pieces of asphalt and rubble inside a crevice.”

Collette reached for the baby through the foot-deep, half-moon-shaped crevice, and brought out the baby.

Reports mentioned that there were signs that the baby was delivered in a hospital and wrapped in a blanket. However, she was said to be “cold to the touch” when the deputies found her. The baby girl was believed to have been 3- to 4-days-old when she was rescued by the authorities.

Based on her physical features, the baby is speculated to be African-American or Hispanic descent. Since then, the authorities appealed to the mother of the child to come forward. Police had also sought the help of the media, as well as the public in pointing to the mother’s identity.

After the rescue, paramedics from the Compton Fire Department arrived and brought the newborn to a hospital, where she has been undergoing recovery.

On Saturday, reports said that the child was doing well, and would soon be put up for adoption. Jaramilla said that the child’s mother was probably too afraid and was not ready to raise her child. Parents often harm or abandon their children because of difficult circumstances. However, he said that the mother did not need to resort to burying her newborn alive. She could have just surrendered the baby to authorities, who would have made sure that the child would be okay.

“A parent stuck in this difficult situation can safely surrender their baby at any hospital or fire station in Los Angeles County, no questions asked,” Jaramilla said.

California’s “Safe Surrender” Law allows parents of children born within 72 hours to bring their newborn to any hospital and fire station without fear of charges.

However, the mother of this newborn is likely to face serious charges for leaving her child on its own in harsh conditions.
