New Orlean authorities arrested a suspect today in connection to a Friday night shooting that left medical student Peter Gold in critical condition.

ABC News reports that Euric Cain, 21, was arrested today after police found him hiding out in a home in New Orleans. Cain is accused of shooting Gold, 25, a Tulane University medical student who stopped the suspect from dragging an unknown, inebriated woman into his SUV.

Surveillance camera footage shows a chilling scene on New Orleans’ St. Mary Street, where Cain allegedly shot Gold in the abdomen after trying to rob him. The suspect then pointed the gun directly at Gold’s head and attempted to shoot him at least twice, but both times the gun jammed. Cain then ran to his SUV and drove away, leaving Gold on the ground in critical condition. The unknown woman is in good health and worked with police in capturing Gold.

New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu stated that Cain has an extensive criminal history. Earlier this month, he was arrested for carrying a stolen cellphone and carjacking. In 2011, he was arrested for illegal possession and carrying of a firearm, and in 2014, he was arrested for theft of a motor vehicle.

Landrieu confirmed in a public statement today that the suspect will more than likely spend the rest of his days behind bars.

“Now he will likely spend the rest of his life in jail, as he should.”

CBS News reports that the New Orleans police and U.S. Marshals found Cain at around 11:30 a.m. off of the 2200 block of Delechaise Street. A woman was also arrested in connection with the crime, but authorities indicated yesterday that the young woman Cain attempted to kidnap and rob didn’t know the suspect and wasn’t connected in assisting him. The name of the other suspect has not been released.

Cain’s SUV was found this weekend in Central City, off of the 2200 block of Reverend John Raphael Place.

Meanwhile, Gold remains in the hospital in critical condition. His family released a public statement this, thanking supporters for well wishes, but also hoping for as much privacy as possible during this difficult time.

“While we deeply appreciate everyone’s concern, support and prayers as our family faces this crisis, our sole focus at this time is on Peter’s recovery. We ask that everyone respect our need for privacy while we join Peter as he begins to recover from the injuries he has sustained.”

Gold is in his fourth year of medical school, and students and staff alike are praying for his recovery.

Euric Cain remains in jail and faces felony charges of attempted first-degree murder, armed robbery, and second-degree kidnapping. So far, there is no indication if the suspect will receive a bond. The story is still developing.
