If you’re a fan of Icelandic band Sigur Rós, you’ll probably love the band’s new video for “Fjogur Piano.” If you’re a fan of Shia LaBeof’s Transformers franchise, you might think it’s a little bizarre.
The Wall Street Journal reports that Sigur Ros handed out $10,000 to a dozen filmmakers to create music videos for the band’s new album. The filmmakers each took control of one song, were given no instructions from band, and created a video based solely on what they felt the music conveyed. Director Alma Har’el’s video for “Fjogur Piano features an A-list star, male nudity, butterflies, lollipops, and a car crash.
Har’el, who has also directed music videos for bands like Beirut, said:
“The things you can’t say in words are best said in dance… (The video can be) about addiction to drugs, or sex, or anything–and how you get stuck in a cycle…. very beautiful things that die very fast… For me, it’s about not knowing how to get out of something without causing pain to somebody else… For other people it might be about candy and fish. I’m down with that.”
Har’el said that she received an email “out of the blue” from LaBeouf after the actor had watched “Bombay Beach” on DVD. The two met for dinner and Har’el told him about the Sigur Ross project. LaBeouf then volunteered his services.
Har’el also said that the nudity in the video wasn’t planned. After shooting for a few days the actors and crew believed that the video would work better if both actress Denna Thomsen and Shia LaBeouf appeared nude.
Har’el said:
“That’s the difference between working within a corporate system and something that artistically takes you places you wouldn’t expect,” the director says. “To me, it’s erotic, but it’s not selling anything.”
Shia LaBeouf and Thomsen appear fully nude in the new video, so we won’t post “Fjogur Piano” here. The video is available on Youtube here.
