Beau Hossler is only 17 but he’s golfing toe to toe with some of the greatest players in the game. Hossler is currently three strokes off of par, four strokes from leaders Graeme McDowell and Jim Furyk, and according to Hossler, just 18 holes away from his first U.S. Open win.
When asked if he could win the U.S. Open, Hossler said:
“Absolutely. There’s not a doubt in my mind. Got to go out there and do everything right mentally and physically. But it’s definitely out there for me.”
Just qualifying for the U.S. Open is a huge accomplishment. According to USA Today, Hosler is the first person to qualify for the U.S. Open as a high school player since Mason Rudolph did the same in 1950. If he does indeed win the tournament, he’ll be the 6th player to win as an amateur.
Hossler said:
“I can’t tell you how much I appreciate the support from everybody out there… Not only my family and friends from home, but all the people in the Bay Area. It’s really special.”
Hossler has finished two of three rounds with an even par and one round three strokes over. He’s hit 10 birdies this week, the third most in the field, and is currently one stroke ahead of Tiger Woods. Hossler will need Jim Furyk and Graeme McDowell to miss a shot or two today if he wants to win the U.S. Open, but it is possible.
Hossler’s dad said: “This is unbelievable. He can win this thing.”
