Google on Tuesday announced the acquisition of Quickoffice, a software design firm that creates apps for viewing and editing Microsoft Office documents. Google has been focusing much of its effort on the office productivity sector, specifically through its Google Docs application. Some analysts believe the acquisition will help aid Google in the creation of its upcoming Nexus tablets which feature Google Android technology.
Quickoffice started in the office space early, at first providing the Symbian platform with the ability to view and eventually edit Office documents from a users smartphone, the company now offers popular products for both Google Android and iOS devices.
While both companies announced the acquisition neither went into specifics about the cost of the acquisition or which employees and operations will make the transition over to the Google team.
While Google Docs originally started as a basic office editor Google has since added new templates, additional webfonts and other options that have brought the program more in lien with Microsoft Office. Google also recently added a research tool which takes advantage of Google’s search know-how.
Google has ben working endlessly to make Google Docs a seemless experience via tablet devices and with Quickoffice the company may be able to finally created a rich, fully functional productivity suite which may become a major selling point for its Nexus tablet line of devices as more business users continue to gravitate towards tablet based devices in place of netbooks, notebooks and other traditional PC based computing options.
