The mad scientist that is Chip Kelly will be without one of his key ingredients today as DeMarco Murray is listed as inactive versus the New York Jets.
According to ESPN, Murray was downgraded from questionable to out following a pre-game workout that proved DeMarco’s ailing hamstring wasn’t going to be able to go the distance. Ryan Matthews will instead carry the load today versus a Jets team that just got through trouncing the Indianapolis Colts on Monday Night Football earlier in the week.
The Murray loss is yet another blow to the Chip Kelly formed team many pundits called into question at the beginning of the season. According to Penn Live , today’s game could signal the premature end to the Chip Kelly experiment in the NFL.
“The third season is typically when a coach’s program is going to take off – if it’s going to take off. Instead, after two 10-6 campaigns, this has the look of a fitful first season in the wake of all the personnel changes. Chip Kelly has lost five of his last six games and is in dire need of stopping the spiral. I applaud coaches, especially ones coming to the NFL from college, who challenge convention and try to innovate to make the game evolve. But if there is yet another loss, this is going to start looking like Steve Spurrier in Washington instead of the hoped-for Jimmy Johnson in Dallas.”
The Jets, meanwhile, have their own injuries to deal with coming into the game. Star cornerback and big name free agent signing Darrelle Revis dealt with a groin injury throughout the week, but is listed as active for today’s matchup, according to the New York Daily News . Running back Chris Ivory, also dealing with a similar groin ailment, will also play. However, starting wide receiver Eric Decker will remain on the sidelines today, as his banged up knee will keep him inactive for the contest.
The 0-2 Philadelphia Eagles are coming off their embarrassing loss to the Tony Romo-less Cowboys last week. Starting quarterback Sam Bradford looked absolutely lost on the field, leading many Eagles fans to clamor for Mark Sanchez, of all players, to take over as the starting QB this week against his former team. Sanchez went 3-3 as the starter last year after Nick Foles went down with injury.
