Ariana Grande’s new perfume hit store shelves today, and the 22-year-old singer is pretty happy with how it turned out. The only problem is that her brother likes the way she smells just a little too much.
The fragrance, dubbed ARI by Ariana Grande, was designed by fragrance giant Firmenich, but Grande took an active role in its development. In a recent phone interview, Ariana revealed to WWD that she had no interest in slapping her name on some off-the-rack scent .
“I’ve been obsessed with smells my whole life,” Grande told WWD . “I would walk around my house literally smelling like a bakeshop. I’m not just slapping my name on some perfume I think smells OK.”
It shouldn’t come as any surprise that ARI is a sweet fragrance, since Ariana is so clearly a fan of sweet things.
This past summer, TMZ released security cam footage of the singer getting up close and personal with a donut .
Grande’s new fragrance is conspicuously lacking in any donut-scent notes.
According to WWD, Firmenich’s Frank Voelkl helped the singer put together a complex landscape of scents that includes “top notes of crispy pear, pink grapefruit and juicy raspberry.”
Also crucial to the scent profile is a “drydown of marshmallow.”
According to Grande, she discovered that most of her favorite fragrances included raspberry and marshmallow scents, so if a perfume was going to have her name, it had to be “sweet and fruity.”
Apparently, that runs in the family.
In an interview with WWD , the singer admitted that her big bro was perhaps a little too enamored with her signature fragrance.
“My brother Frankie is obsessed with it and wearing it everywhere. He’s always like, ‘I need a new bottle.’ And I’m like, ‘I don’t have a bottle! I need one for myself!’ He keeps stealing mine!”
In addition to the custom scent profile, everything about the new fragrance was customized to Grande’s liking, right down to the packaging. The singer chose a multi-faceted lavender bottle, based on her favorite color, and topped it off with a fluffy white pom pom.
“I wanted the bottle itself to look really old school, like something you would see in an old movie.”
The fragrance went on sale today, but Ariana is planning to attend a launch event next week. Grande promoted the event, where she will meet fans and pose for photos, via Twitter.
