Patrick Dempsey is making the leap from the small screen and Grey’s Anatomy back to the big screen in the next installment of the Bridget Jones movie series. While Grey’s Anatomy is still mourning the loss of McDreamy, Dempsey seems to have his eyes forward onto new opportunities.
But Grey’s Anatomy’s future is now uncertain since the departure of Patrick Dempsey, as a petition was created for Shonda Rhimes to bring McDreamy back. The Inquisitr reported that Rhimes has explained that it was difficult to kill off Dempsey’s character, but that it has created new opportunities for the lead character of Meredith Grey. Currently, Rhimes and Ellen Pompeo are still dealing with the fallout, trying to convince fans that the series will survive without Dempsey.

Entertainment Weekly is reporting that Patrick Dempsey will be featured in the new film , Bridget Jones’ Baby . Renee Zellweger is back in the title role, and Colin Firth will also return as Bridget’s love, Mark Darcy. There is no word yet on what role Dempsey will play, but Hugh Grant is not returning, which might be a clue. Dempsey told the magazine in the spring that he was ready to leave broadcast television to try something new.
People Magazine is reporting that Dempsey was ready to move past being forever recognized as McDreamy.
“I want to try something different,” he told Entertainment Weekly at the time. “[But] is Derek so identifiable that I can’t go on and be someone else?”
Deadline Hollywood is reporting that the movie with the working title, Bridget Jones’ Baby takes the publishing executive into her 40s, based on the columns and novels by Helen Fielding . It is thought that Patrick Dempsey could be playing a rival for the affections of Bridget Jones in the same way that Grant did in the previous movies. The movie is reported not to be the film version of the Fielding novel, Mad About the Boy .

Refinery29 believes that Dempsey will have no trouble getting back into feature films after leaving Grey’s Anatomy .
