Streaming TV service options just got larger and more free. Soon, Verizon will have its own streaming TV app available on your phone or tablet. And, you don’t have to be a Verizon subscriber to get it.

Verizon’s new service will be called Go90 and it is specifically targeted to 18-34 year olds. Since most consumers in this age range tend to view videos and movies on their mobile device, Verizon believes introducing the streaming TV service will grow their customer base among this age group.

When talking about why the company chose this demographic, Verizon’s president of product innovation and new business Marni Walden said, “seventy percent of this group view on mobile first; that’s an enormous opportunity.”

The Go90 streaming TV service will include the most watched shows from Comedy Central, Food Network, ESPN, NFL Network, and Discovery. The big excitement around the streaming TV service is the availability of NFL football games and live concerts.

The content will be free to watch, however much like the popular streaming TV service Hulu, expect to watch commercials as well.

Every day more and more people are cutting the cable cord and opting instead for streaming TV. Streaming TV services including Hulu and Netflix continue to be popular as they continually improve and update their service plans, making them a viable alternative to cable or satellite.

More recently, other streaming TV services have been introduced to the market like Dish Network’s Sling TV. HBO, Showtime, and CBS even have their own steaming TV services that do not require you to subscribe to a pay television subscription.

According to Tech Radar , the streaming TV service from Verizon is unlikely to be available on set-top boxes like Roku 3 or Amazon Fire TV. The company is hoping that only offering it on phone and tablets will more likely convince millennials to try a streaming TV service on a device they already own.

As streaming TV viewing continues grow, the television industry is seeing sharp declines in ratings. With the introduction of their streaming TV service, Verizon is betting they can capture many of these “cord-cutting” customers.

As previously reported by the Inquisitr , a new streaming TV service from Apple may be on the horizon as well.

From a recent article in The New York Times , the streaming TV service will be available to anyone, not just exclusively to Verizon customers. As part of the marketing effort to capture and appeal to consumers outside the Verizon customer base, the streaming TV service specifically excluded the name Verizon.

Since most would prefer to watch streaming TV in landscape mode, Verizon chose the name Go90 reflect the act of rotating a phone 90 degrees.

The Go90 streaming TV service will have a social media aspect by allowing users to share their viewing experience with others. According to Ms. Walden,”it’s Hulu meets Twitter meets Netflix, with all of this social content.”

The streaming TV app has not launched yet, but anyone interested can visit the Go90 website and signup to be notified of its availability.
