Wes Craven Tributes Terrorize The Web, Just The Way The Master Would Have Wanted

Wes Craven tributes are piling up all over the web today after it was announced Sunday night that the horror auteur had died from brain cancer at the age of 76.

Craven was widely known in horror circles as being a person antithetical to the movies that he made. Numerous actors and actresses, who had screamed for him in films like A Nightmare on Elm Street and the Scream franchise — and even spurt blood for him — remember a “sweet,” “kind,” and “gentle” man.

Hardly what one would expect from the guy, who created the razor-gloved serial killer Freddy Krueger — or perhaps exactly what one would expect depending on POV.

The horror film community is a tight-knit bunch. For all the blood and gore that they celebrate on screen, there is plenty of support and encouragement to go around off screen. And when one of their own passes, the grief is felt all around, as depicted in these amazing Wes Craven tributes from Twitter, Tumblr, Facebook, and all around the web.

Here are our favorites.

While most of these Wes Craven tributes focused on Craven’s most popular creation — wisecracking Freddy — you’ll also spot some of his other creations, namely the Ghostface Killer ( Scream ), Pluto ( The Hills Have Eyes ), and the underrated Horace Pinker ( Shocker ).

Craven’s activity on the directing front had slowed in recent years with his last two films being a return to the horror genre with Scream 4 (2011) and My Soul to Take (2010) after some brief time away for films like Music of the Heart and Paris, je t’aime , the latter of which he only directed a segment.

Thankfully, he left behind a legacy of terror and millions of fans who love him for it. Which of these Wes Craven tributes made you the most misty? Sound off in the comments section.
