Star Wars fans have wondered what role Oscar Issac’s Poe Dameron will play in the upcoming The Force Awakens ever since the film’s first trailer was released, and now the name of the squadron he is set to lead has been purportedly revealed.

Issac made a major impression on fans early on, as Poe Dameron was seen in the first trailer piloting his X-wing just a few feet above a lake, the first time one of the iconic spaceships had graced the screen in decades. The first trailers for The Force Awakens , as well as early set photographs, made it clear that Dameron was the leader of a fighter squadron, though little else has been revealed regarding him.

According to Making Star Wars , the name of the squadron that Dameron will head in the next Star Wars is hardly new in the lexicon of the series, though fans might not recognize it at first. They assert that Issac will lead a group of fighters known as Black Squadron, the very same name held by the TIE fighter wing that supported Darth Vader at the Battle of Yavin.

While the squadron’s name may be little more than an intentional nod to the classic Star Wars trilogy , Cinema Blend points out that there may be more than meets the eye when it comes to Black Squadron. When principal photography was being conducted for The Force Awakens , fans began to see images leaking from the set of an X-Wing sporting a black and orange paint job. Distinct from the blue fighters seen in the first trailer for The Force Awakens , it remains unclear whether the black ship (or ships) will be piloted by the Rebels or agents of the First Order.

Promotional images have also confirmed the existence of a black and orange X-wing, giving rise to speculation that it could be piloted by Issac, and that Black Squadron may derive their name from his ship. Rumors have abounded that Poe Dameron steals a ship sometime during the course of the film, and there is every possibility that a black X-wing, possibly used by the First Order, could be the fighter in question (though associated with the Rebel Alliance in the films, X-wing fighters were originally developed by the Empire, before they were stolen).
While details remain sparse, fans will no doubt learn much more regarding Black Squadron when Star Wars: The Force Awakens opens on December 18.
